A letter appeared in THE EXPRESS TRIBUNE Newspaper today by a girl student Miss Hanna Noor Malik of LUMS ( Lahore University of Management Sciences) Lahore as under:-

  Chasing female drivers

LAHORE: Staring happens to be the favorite pastime of most Pakistani men. They seem to spare not even those women who wear burqas. As for those who wear jeans, being stared at by men is something that they experience on a daily basis. And this extends also to women who drive, regardless of how one happens to dress.
I leave for my university every morning with sunshades covering all four of my car windows and sunglasses covering most of my face. But not a day goes by without some car full of hooligans following me to my university or singing profane songs at me, all thanks to Bollywood. Some male drivers very graciously take it upon themselves to keep in my lane without letting me overtake and slow down to the point that I sometimes get late for class.
Is letting a woman drive in peace too much to ask for?

I did FA from Dyal Singh College, Lahore during 1960-62 and this was not good reputed college in any case in Lahore though it was a bit better than Muslim Anglo Oriental (MAO) College, Lahore but though I could have been in some other college in Lahore but my father advised me to be in Dyal Singh not because he had been there but because Prof Dr Rafiq Ahmad Khan, Ph D (Cantab), Former Head Botany, Muslim Aligarh University, Aligarh, India was the Principal and honest to Allah I am very proud to have been there. Islamia College 4 Girls, Cooper Road was very near to Dyal Singh College so many girl students passed through DSC and unfortunately some students used to tease, pass remarks and even chase the girls to Islamia College and this had come to the notice of Prof Dr Rafiq who simply could not tolerate it at all and decided to end it once for all which was neither so quick not so easy but he had determined to uproot it at all cost. Prof will leave his office and come to nearby bus stops from where he will tell his students to go back to DSC and this he will do as many times as he could afford. Students naturally did not like but he threatened them to expel from DSC if they did not stop the practice. He will also catch anyone found calling name, teasing or chasing girls and the whole college had come to know that since Prof Dr Rafiq is Principal, DSC no student can dare to behave alike and it did work. He used to address as ‘Barkhurdar, aap ki jaga college hay, yeh bus stop naheen. Aapko zaib naheen daita kay DSC main parrhain aur aisi neech harkat karain’

Prof Syed Imtiaz Ali Taj or Justice Kayani (one of the two, but most probably Prof Imtiaz) was living nearby and his daughter studying at Islamia Collge, Cooper Road used to daily pass thru DSC and at least if not more will go after her till she reaches IC and though the girl collegiate never liked it but what could she do otherwise so she had to accept the chase. Now I remove the curtain so take full breath and stop inhaling or exhaling and listen to what I say now. Prof Dr Rafiq had chased his students for weeks if not months and eventually no DSC student could be found outside DSC premises resulting in that the daughter of Prof Imtiaz was not chased anymore and quite naturally she was both happy and astonished and could not work out how could the well set practice is stopped while nothing is changed otherwise.

The girl students is the same who passes through the same route and at same time but she is no more followed by anyone though DSC is very much there and since the academic session is running so DSC students will also remain the same so how and why this change? She noted the change and waited for few days to confirm if the practice is discarded. I think after about a week she came to DSC and wished to meet Principal and explain what treatment she had been getting for many months and what has been changed recently. Luckily or unluckily Prof Dr was not there so someone suggested that she meets VP but she didn’t and came back. After few days she attempted again and she met Prof Dr Rafiq and explained as to why she came here. Prof smiled and said to the college girl student that you are absolutely wrong to impute my students. He said no DSC student chased you rather on the contra DSC Principal chased you and since now I am the principal who is not in the habit of chasing girls so you are not chased. She was dumb and thanked Prof Dr Rafiq for meeting her. Next day Prof Dr Rafiq called for college assembly where he narrated the story.

If the parents, elders, friends and others teach others what to do and what not to do then our problems will certainly be lessened though not eliminated but the problem is none takes any interest to do alike.
