More intelligence: Poor Director CIA Michael Hayden and poorer still Musharraf

By: Farrukh Khan Pitafi

So Michael Hayden had to speak at last. He reckons or at least pretends that "Al-Qaeda"'s Baitullah Mehsud is involved in the assassination of Mohtarma Bhutto. Is it not interesting? Well you bet it is because apparently here is the world's most powerful agency's head making a fool of himself. The joke is in the deeply embedded in the very narrative for if Mr Hayden reveals only his ignorance by overlooking the subtle difference between the Taliban and Al Qaeda. If you do not know this difference sir do you have any right to be the agency's head?

I'll talk about the difference later. Let us now talk about the apparent reasons for this statement. First that the agency wants to distance itself from Musharraf's possible assassination. Now this attitude would betray nothing but mere guilt consciousness. Through this statement he has made his organisation's implication more easy. For if he is now supporting Musharraf's cause by absolving him of his alleged crimes, do you think he will remain the same even afterwards? Do remember April Gillespie the US Ambassador to Iraq,'s meeting with Saddam before the invasion of Kuwait? If you do, you need no more explanation. The second cause is that after getting the intelligence reports that some of the best world's best agencies are plotting against him Musharraf concluded that the US wants him to do more and has made some new concessions to the US. In that way too, an important intelligence leader is issuing a statement that works as a receipt: Your goods have reached and we will reciprocate.
But unfortunately Mr Hayden is a bureaucrat not an intelligence operative. He arrived at CIA from the fattest US code breaking agency NSA and has failed to bring any serious change to the War on Terror or a failing CIA as the CIA workforce doesn't feel comfortable working with any person imposed at the top from outside. His comments cannot be taken too seriously for even though I hate to break it to Mr Hayden, I have to tell the truth, he is soon to be sacked or replaced. Please remember this at every cost and keep counting days especially if you do not trust me.
And when I was reporting Musharraf's assassination plot is ready I didn't single out any agency. When I am informed that the decision has been taken at policy level I am also told that it is at much more powerful level than that of Mr Hayden's. And why because everyone knows Musharraf is only a liability, a fat and heavy liability. It is also well known now that his end will not end Pakistan's cooperation in the war on terror. Perhaps the only thing that could have given some hope to Musharraf's situation, would have been his abrupt decision to stand down. But he will not do that and will essentially lose in any case. If he thinks leaving this country for a while and making concessions to the Yanks will improve his position he is grossly mistaken. Obviously I am narrating all this on the basis of some information provided to me which could be wrong, but I have thus far no reasons to doubt it given the good record of this source and that it makes perfect sense. If Musharraf has to know who actually is responsible for this he should look into the mirror and see the man who destroyed his liberal legacy and international image. The problem with the world is that it has to work with the people of Pakistan on a much too long term basis and it cannot risk another Iranian revolution in Pakistan by supporting Musharraf beyond a limit. That's that folks. Wait and see.
