SUKKUR: Some 45 Mutahida Qaumi Movement activists from Nauraja Unit of Pano Aqil resigned from the party membership in protest against the May 12 Karachi carnage.

The resigned activists, including, Rafiq Mahar, Abdul Samee Samejo, Abdul Hameed Mangi, alleged the party leadership of involvement in the killings.

Separately, some 100 activists of the Pakistan Peoples Party Parliamentarians (PPPP) staged a demonstration in front of the press club here on Wednesday against the Karachi carnage.

Led by MPA Dr Nasrullah Baloch, the PPPP activists raised slogans against the government and the Mutahida Qaumi Movement, blaming them for the bloodshed in Karachi on May 12. They demanded judicial inquiry into the matter.

Our Jamshoro correspondent adds: Hundreds of workers and activists of the Pakistan People's Party staged a demonstration against the Karachi killings in Mehar on Wednesday.

The PPP workers, led by President PPP Mehar Ghulam Dastgir, gathered at the main office of the party in Mehar and brought out a rally from there.

Carrying placards and banners, the protesters marched on various roads. They arrived at the local press club where they staged a sit-in.

Speakers, on the occasion, condemned the MQM's alleged negative role in the Karachi violence and called for constituting an inquiry commission, comprising senior judges of the Supreme Court and taking action in the light of its report.

Separately, PPP Tando Muhammad Khan district president and 50 activists and workers of the party were booked on Wednesday for violating Section 144.

They have been charged with taking out a protest rally, blockade of various roads, staging a sit-in, motivating people to come out on roads and violating Section 144.

Prominent among those booked are PPP Tando Muhammad Khan district President Amin Lakho, President People's Lawyers Forum Muhammad Ali Qureshi, local president Sindh Taraqqi Pasand Party Aijaz Noonari and MMA district President Maulana Ramzan Soomro.

Our Hyderabad correspondent adds: A leader of Pakistan People's Party Parliamentarians (PPPP) on Wednesday demanded the formation of a caretaker government in the country in the wake of persisting crises, and demanded of the Musharraf government to step down.

PPPP' ex-MPA Usman Kennedy told a news conference at the Hyderabad Press Club that the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) was responsible for the Karachi carnage and cases should be registered against MQM leaders and the Sindh governor.

He said many innocent citizens were killed on May 12, but the Rangers and the police took no measure to stop the violence. He wondered why the Rangers had been authorised to 'shoot to kill'.

He said the Musharraf government should step down in order to save the country from further destruction, adding that free and fair elections were not possible under Musharraf. He said an independent Election Commission should be formed.

He also demanded that the local government institutions should be disbanded as in the presence of these institutions the elections could not be termed transparent.
