Dear All

Having read some of the posts on this forum and more importantly, some of the replies, I am convinced that some of the readers could use some of the below lines for self enlightening.

I'm sure you must all be fussing over the events in our beloved country; not knowing which side to argue for. Following is my take on it; rational comments welcome.

1.      What is so big about emergency?

Every organ of the state keeps functioning as it was; the only people affected by it will be the politicians who will probably have to wait a bit longer for a return on their investments in the business of politics. In Pakistan, basic human rights are not available anyway. The so called missing person's cases were there for last 6 years. Why did the honourable chief Justice suddenly had a call of conscience? Makhdoom Javaid Hashmi was in detention for past 2 years? Incidently indicted, and convicted by same courts. How come the CJ suddenly remembered that he was charged falsely or that he had completed his term? Was he the only one? I am sure there must be thousands. What honourable CJ and the justice system needs to ensure is that nobody has to stay in custody a second more than s/he should. Lets accept that it was just vindictive agenda against government and wasn't a call of conscience.

2.      What's the alternate?

OK; if we imagine for a moment that Musharraf steps down as Army  chief as well as is disqualified as a presidential candidate. Obviously Pakistan  will not crashing down and nobody is indispensible. However, we will have another period of uncertainty in which country will suffer a lot. At least at present he has a set of cohorts who listen to him blindly. A quick comparison can be made as follows:

S No

Parameter

Musharraf

Qazi & party

Nawaz Sharif & Party

BB & Zardari

1.

World image

Great. His only crime is that he thinks he can fix things right and is trying it constantly.

We'll soon be classed with Iran & Syria

He was partially acceptable but wasn't at all articulate enough to be classed as a world renown leader

Although she is /was most acceptable to world, we all know her too well to trust her with government. Case in point, her recent letter published in press.

2

Economy

On the rise

We'll most probably be put under sanctions so we can have no trade

We know his version of economic progress. Forex reserves were down to barely a month's payables of imports and economy was nose diving. He just earned some votes by yellow cab scheme which was a great drain on economy.

Although, Nawaz Sharif just legalized the eating up of foreign currency, it was basically started by her. Her famous statement was that so what if the economy is down , we'll print more notes...

3

Foreign investment

One of the highest

He will most probably class it "˜Haraam'

The only feature of his government was motorway, which was basically built with loan against Pakistan;

Yes, she invests all the money that she "˜earns' from here in Switzerland & PALACES AROUND THE WORLD.

4.

American Military & Economic Aid

All time high

No chance

Stopped

Meagre!

5

Sanctions

He is playing his cards very well such that he hasn't outlived his utility for Americans, hence as long as Americans need him, they cannot put sanctions against us.

We can bet, we'll have the strictest sanctions ever placed on any country.

Actually levied after 1998 explosions, which in my opinion were needlessly done. Actually we suffered more than India. Though some would argue that we became an atomic power so big deal. We were always an atomic power, we just earned the world wrath.

No special sanctions, but yes, they did agree to give us 60 additional F-16s which was her success.

7

Taming the Army

Army will always be under his control.

No Chance

No  Chance

No Chance; remember Mirza Aslam Beg seeing her off without cap from GHQ?

(I have deliberately not mentioned Q league since they are just a
psuedo party, front face for Musharraf's democratized Marshal law)
So they are all equally corrupt like all other politicians.

Its better that Musharraf fixes them all, under this psuedo
democracy. I agree, its a farce and just an eyewash, but lets hope
that may be, just maybe, he can bring about a change. He
has already made some changes such as graduation requirement for MNAs
& MPAs, local governments are working beautifully (although they are
involved in internal bickering, but at least its going on), The
electronic ID cards & MRPs will help get rid of bogus votes.

3.      Democracy, Pakistan style?

We have a unique style of democracy where votes are given in return for:

a.     A days meal by candidate

b.     A free ride on tractor trolley/ buses to polling station

c.     Bicycles

d.     Sewing machines

Well, it is true for 80% of Pakistan which matters. We are really not ready for true democracy. Democratic institutions like western countries, cannot flourish in our country for years to come so why try to have a shame democracy; better have what we are; autocracy.

For the consumption of all those l falling in line with media hype" hai hai mar gaye; zulm ho
gaya", please try to understand the true meanings of:

1. hey jurm-i-zaeefi ki saza marg-i-mafajaat

2. first deserve then desire

I will leave the religious thoughts out of this, since I am no expert on
it but I know that anyone rising above grade 19 or above in the system
of government of Pakistan has to have certain "Qualities " to rise against all
odds. HE/SHE HAS TO TAKE A LOT OF THINGS, AGREE TO A LOT AGAINST
HIS/HER  CONSCIENCE, TRY TO STAND OUT IN THE LINE OF OTHER 'YES SIRERS' ETC.
(I am sorry if it includes some of the people on this forum but I still stand by my conviction) I have actually been to Courts in connection with a job, I used to do. The whole system of courts is unfortunately based on anything but justice & fairness. You all must have seen in movies when a witness is called, s/he promptly takes stand. Well this is not how it
happens in our country. There is a designated man who goes out of court
to call the witness. Its standard Rs.50 per call. You don't pay him, he will go out and come back saying the witness is not present. There is a 'Peshkaar', who acts as a go between. Once the case is put up to judge and there is no jail warrant attached to papers, the judge knows 'understanding' has been reached and regardless of evidence, the 'mulzim' shall be given 'zamanat'; if however no understanding has been reached with peshkar, a jail warrant is attached, and regardless of evidence, the mulzim goes to jail. Speaking of bar council funds, well ......now who is being naive. Have you seen why every Prime Minister goes and addresses the bar councils for support? you think they support him on merit? no sir, its all give and take. The same courts legatimized Musharraf's take over? where was their conscience then? I'm sorry I cannot agree that they ALL had a sudden call of conscience. It was pure personal vendetta in which Musharraf outsmarted him. I am not saying Musharraf is a pariah or he came the right way or his cohorts Justice retd Abdul Qayyum or that minister Mr. Wasti are angels...All I was trying to say was at the moment, it is in the best interest of Pakistan. COMPARATIVE OPTIONS OF OTHERS ARE GIVEN ABOVE. Yes, Pakistan will not fall if he goes home but then we'll have to start from scratch. Its' very good to
talk about revolutions but revolutions throw a nation many years back.
Are we willing to pay that price? Given our explosive population growth
rate, our meagre economic performance?

Our economy is cotton based, Nigeria's oil based & so on. Our imports have always been more than exports; hence the balance of payments go against us. Thus a stage comes
when we have no dollars left to pay for our imports. However, if our forex have increased, it actually means we have earned dollars one way or the other. Its as simple as that. Although infrastructure building such as motorways is no sign of economic progress since  infrastructures are conventionally built in recessions (Y=C+I+G-Subsidy; hence when G
increases economy increases), Motorways upto Burhan towards Peshawer,
M2-link to Faisalabad, Dual carriage Indus Highway all across Pakistan,
have all been built in this tenure. Credit rating of Pakistan has
improved (Moody`s) in this tenure regardless of loan. All international
agencies have acknowledged our GDP growth.

Arab Israel wars of 67 & 73 have proved it beyond doubt that american
technology is far superior to Russian (which in our case is available
to India only). So its great to talk about self sustainance and LIVING
LIKE A LION FOR A DAY THAN 100 YEARS LIKE A JACKAAAL, but we all know
what kind of Muslims we are. There won't be any DATA Brigades fighting
for us and there won't be any wins like Ghazwa-i-Badr. Hence down to a
real conflict, we'll see all Benazir etc. sitting in their palaces
abroad and poor people of Pakistan will die. Imran Khan has very good
agenda but he can never win in the election scenario of winning seats by
Gun (Sindh Urban), commandeering tractor trolley or buses or free meals,
bicycles or sewing machines. He will probably have to wait a long time
before people start voting on issues.

Lets first become strong; let Pakistan be known as a centre of
excellence for technology, for athletics, for systems, for universities,
even tolerance . Let the statistics prove that Madrissahs have turned
out scholars who have impacted mankind in many ways. Let Muslims in
general and Pakistanis in particular be known world over for conduct,
fairness, principles, piety, scientific research and then we can tell
off anyone that our system is better than yours so GTH; till that time,
I am afraid its:

beggers can't be chosers

Dear Noman
Thank you for your apology; its accepted.

As you might recall, as soon as Musharraf came in, he had made 2 key changes:
1. Progress of civil servants, who rise in grades as a block instead of a pyramid. meaning thereby that they were just getting next higher grades/ promotion by a simple rule of years of service put in with complete disregard to annual appraisals/ performance. The maximum punishment for a civil servant is OSD, which means full pay and no job. Also They can go on forced leave any time & yet retain their seniority.

Most of civil servants of DMG group, went on leave, leaving the governement machinery sort of wheel jammed. They also resisted the change in promotion criteria on the basis of performance. Since Musharraf did not have any legal powers to change civil servant's act, he gave in and it was only then that they came back to work.

2. He issued orders for sacking of about 1000 income tax officials. One by one, all of them were reinstated by our honourable courts plus got their accumulated pays back plus got their seniority back. Again Musharraf could not do anything.

As you know, whole system of governement is run by civil servants of DMG and all revenue is controlled by income tax.Once he could not do anything against these two main departments, he could not implement his reforms.

This is just my analysis and obviously I don't know what actually happened, but as I see it, whichever way he wanted to move forward over past 8 years, his reforms were blocked through civilian disobedience means and courts.

He brought in a make-belief democratic governement to address economy as a first step. Now that economy is up & running, I am sure all these ills shall be cured one by one. But first of all we have to correct the justice system.....which has started. I hope & pray that once we have truly consciencious judiciary (Inshaallah) you will see that things will begin to change...which is what we all want.

About the kind of people leading us, I think I have read it some where that God Almighty imposes bad leaders on bad nations....

Islam is not a single person's practice. Its a complete code of life. Unless we have a true Islamic society, we cannot start demanding Islamic culture. It has to come from within. I am sure you must drive around wherever you live. Do you see people pressing other cars against their right of way...that is tarnishing haqooq-ul-Ibad. Can our women walk alone to home in the middle of night? What happens to inheritance of Orphans...reltives eat up money. These are essentials taht we first need to address. We need to find the difference between essentials, preferences & recommendations of Islam. for example
1. Prayers, zakat, human rights, rights of women, are all essentials.

2. Beard, Holiday on Friday etc. may fall in preferences.

3. Keeping shalwar above ankles may fall in recommendations...

So lets first implement essentials and everything else shall automatically follow.

Dear NRQazi

Similarly if one is not making sense to other, then the other has no option except to call that nonsense.
But really by using those two words, i was never intended to disrespect.
I used these words to your article not to you.
My apologies.

Now once a real wise person told me a very good saying, and i want to share that with you, and i am very hopeful it will make things clearer among us.

"Never see or try to see what muslim is doing, always try to see what Islam is saying"

I am not bothered by the impression, we Muslims have in the world, because i cant start doing the wrongs with the lame excuse that all are doing.

On the day of judgment, i will be judged only by my actions, Allah there wont give any weight to this excuse that all were doing the same, because may be God will return with this answer to me, OK then go with all where they are going.

and one more thing, may be and yes we are at the lowest level of morality now a days, but tell me very frankly will you chose a person, who is liar, who is drinker, who can sell and give any thing for money or for power, who cant bear pressure, who dont have any moral values to guard your home.
I dont think you will choose because i wont chose either.

When we cant chose such a person to guard our home, then how we can chose such a person to guard the nation.

People today are very happy with Musharraf and spending so much efforts to justify him, those people even forget that why and how Musharraf is a ruler of Pakistan.
We all know that he didn't topple Nawaz government for any national issue, he just did to secure his position.
He was happy with Nawaz and we all know under no circumstances, he was willing to do what he did in the end for national interest.

My simple Q, why Musharraf realized that Nawaz is so corrupt after Nawaz tried to sack him.
how suddenly in plane he came to know about all what he said in his first speech.

What ever points you raised in your reply all are valid, but tell me, what good Musharraf did to resolve them?
Musharraf is in absolute power from last 8years, he could have given alot to the nation but he opted other way.
Tell me even if after 8 years, he needed martial law to control the things, which went wrong under his absolute power, then how good he is.

Why should we chose him again, when he failed to deliver any thing in eight years.
No Mr NRQazi, he is the worse for Pakistan and He should not  even be considered as  an option.
thanks

Dear Noman
First of all, please have tolerance to bear a difference of opinion. Using words like Nonsense & idiot without knowing me, would probably have exactly the opposite effect.

Now about Muslims that we are:
1. have you seen how WE push each other after Juma prayers to get out early and to put our shoes on?

2. Have you seen how we cheat our turns to get to the wuzu area earlier than the person before us?

3. The fruit and vegetables sold outside mosques after juma prayers is all rotten, & highly priced?

4. All those participating in a 'Juloos ' for nifaaz-i-shariaat invariably miss their zuhr prayers.

5. Try getting one small item imported without paying bribe.

6. Try getting a document attested from foreign affairs ministry.

7. Try getting a car registeration or transfer without paying bribe..

8. Ask how all car registration agents carry so expensive mobile sets? & although now mobile calls are very cheap, they were always using them as if they were free even when there were charges on call reception as well.

9. Ask a beverage company delivery vehicle what is the 'rate' of traffic police. a three star constable takes 3 crates of cola at home, a 2 star takes 2 crates and aa one star takes one crate. Ordinary sepahis stop the cola vehicle as they please find a stupid problem with its number plate and do not release it till they get a free of charge drinks crate.

10. I have already narrated what happens in courts.

11. Vice Versa, try getting an illegal document attested, it shall be done failrly easily if you pay the right price.

12. last but not the least, try telling someone to get in queue...

Like I said in my article, we know the kind of Muslims we are. So please leave the religious thoughts out of it.

I can reply to your all nonsense and desperate attempt to make Musharraf a hero and only true Saviour point by point.
But i dont think it will be of any use.
Because if a person cant understand what damage Emergency or martial law has done to civil society, he will understand any thing.
Even very big lovers of Musharraf turned their back to him after this illegal action.
The SC, dair ayye durust ayye, But all you pro-Musharraf are talking one nonsense only, why CJ was not did any thing earlier.
Why you people cant say that at least he is doing right thing now and we should stand beside him.
Do you know why CJ didn't do anything earlier because he that time he was thinking may be that all Pakistanis are impotent and if one person stood for the right, he will be vanished in no time.
But after 3rd March he felt he was wrong, people are alive in Pakistan and that is why he stand besides them and now people like you are trying to demoralizing him instead of strengthening him.
What a pity.
You draft very good article and tried to convince that Musharraf is new love of west and that is why we need him, so indirectly you are saying any one who is acceptable to west should be acceptable to us as well, because only he will guarantee our survival.
Brother will you tell us, why Iran, Venezuela, Cuba are still on the map of world.
We are not baggers, people like you are trying to create an impression that we are baggers and we need help from west.
But Mr NRQazi, we are not baggers, we are proud Muslims and we have very firm belief that Allah is the only Saviour and he will help us.
But we know Allah will help those who have their firm belief in him.
so i think if you even keep half of the faith in Allah rather then having so much in west, Allah will definitely help us.
