Motives Behind Wikileaks

By

Dr. Raja Muhammad Khan

After the leakage of around 92000 classified military documents about the war in Afghanistan by Wikileaks, one would surprise to find that how much chauvinism US still has about Pakistan. In spite of countless sacrifices by Pakistan during the so-called global war on terror and in the past too, there still there exist mistrust between Pakistan and United States. Perhaps, Pak-US relationship has rightly being called as the marriage of convenience. This convenience has mostly suited the United States. The crux of the Wikileaks is that, Pakistan Army and its intelligence agency; ISI maintains a liaison with the Taliban in Afghanistan, and therefore play a double game. Around 180 documents pertain to this alleged relationship without substantial evidences. Impartial media and analysts believe that bulk of the material is either based on sheer misperceptions or complied by sources of RAW accompanying the Afghan intelligence setup.  Paid informers for RAW and CIA have also played significant role in the formulation of the opinions in these reports.

The Wikileaks also indicates that Osma Bin Laden remained in Quetta after the US invasion in Afghanistan following the incident of 9/11. It also reveals that Bin Laden used to hold regular meeting of the Al-Qeada network in Quetta as late as 2006. If U.S authorities were so sure about the Bin Laden’s presence in Pakistan why did they fail to share that information with Pakistani authorities at time? If Pakistan can arrest and handover over 600 terrorists and people like Khalid Sheikh Muhammad to US, Bin Laden or other workers of this nefarious network established by CIA and Mossad should have not been an exception. Al-Qaeda network has indeed brought devastation in Pakistan in the form of spreading the extremism and terrorism. How could Pakistan or its institutions and organizations like Army and ISI back such enemies of the state? Compilers of the report should have been sensible enough while taking into account these logics.

Ever since the US invasion in Afghanistan and Pakistani support to international community in the so-called global war on terror, the Al-Qaeda and its supporter so-called religious organizations like Taliban have been involved in a number of high profile suicide attacks, bombing and other terrorist acts in Pakistan. These terrorist organizations are still doing the same, how could Pakistani intelligence agencies and its Army support them or give them a refuge.  Why U.S and international community is unable to see the ground realities that Pakistani security forces are in a state of war with Taliban and Al-Qaeda. Over 50% strength of Pakistan Army and 100% paramilitary forces (Frontier Corps) are busy in combating the Taliban and other networks. In fact, the linkage which the reports leaked through Wikileaks is trying to establish between Pakistani intelligence setup and Taliban or Bin Laden indeed is malicious and uncalled for.

At the Pakistani Government level, the documents posted on WikiLeaks are considered to be “misplaced, skewed and contrary to the factual position on the ground”. The people of Pakistan and its security forces, including the ISI, have rendered enormous sacrifices against militancy and terrorism. These reports are more of anti-Pakistan propaganda, rather a factual position. Indeed over the last few years, the anti-Pakistan forces have launched a well orchestrated campaign against ISI and Pak Army. The main aim of this propaganda campaign is to defame these well organized national institutes, both domestically as well as internationally.   These forces desire that ISI and Pak Army should only serve their purpose and act as per their desires. Anything in the national interest of Pakistan really annoy these anti-Pakistan forces.

A review of the past few months’ development would reveal that Pakistan was contributing hectically towards Afghan reconciliation and reintegration among its various groups for bringing stability and peace in that war torn country. This act of good will perhaps is unacceptable to the occupants of Afghan soil and the forces all set for the future colonization of that country of brave men.  So much so the puppet Afghan President, Hamid Karazai had the cheeks to ask US for an action against Pakistan. The statement issued from Afghan Presidential office clearly says that, “The recent documents leaked out to the media clearly support and verify Afghanistan's all-time position that success over terrorism does not come with fighting in Afghan villages, but by targeting its sanctuaries and financial and ideological sources across the borders.”

Indeed, the statement is a height of being ungrateful. Why Afghan rulers are so short sighted.  Why they are following the line of those forces who do not want peace in Afghanistan.  Being sons of soil, at least the rulers of Afghanistan should have been loyal to their country and the people, who are now sick of the foreign occupations, infightings and conspiracies against their country. If US led occupation forces and India has the desire to stay in the region for a longer duration to implement their broader agendas, should the elected Afghan Government, allow them to do so. Though the legitimacy of the elections in Afghanistan is still a big question mark, yet, they ought to respect the will of 30 million Afghan people. The brave sons of the Afghan soil have always revolted against the foreign occupation and would not like to continue with the status quo.

Therefore, it is about time that, Afghan rulers should start thinking to secure their national interest rather than serving the interests of foreign powers, occupation forces and extended neighbours like India. Have not they realized that what love U.S and India would have for Afghans and on what basis? Indeed, both have used the potentials of the Afghan people and Afghan soil for their own gains. Now, there is unity of interests of US and India in Afghanistan and that can only be achieved, once there remains instability in that country, because that would provide them an excuse to stay there. Since Pakistan is directly affected by the Afghan instability, therefore, desires that there should be restoration of peace and stability in Afghanistan by eliminating the foreign involvement of any kind.
