A complete bankruptcy of PPP leadership’s strategies

Several friends like Suqlain Imam, Farah Salah Pervaiz, Asad Khan and Liaqat Ali have commented on the article An astute action by PLMN, PPP making history of retreats, A Left viewþ that I wrote just after the government notification of the judges. My arguments were simple and straight forward.

I wrote, “Pakistan Peoples Party leadership has made a mistake. They had not done aptly their home work. They miscalculated the situation. Even if they did this deliberately knowing all the outcomes, it was a very bad move. They did what the constitution allows them to do according to their interpretations. The notification of two judge’s appointments and elevations was not a big deal in ordinary times. However, this is not an ordinary time. The institutions of the capitalist feudal state are in consternation” .

The article was not to undermine the already weak and fragile democracy although; some of the friends have taken my arguments in a different manner. While criticizing the strategy of Mian Nawaz Sharif and GEO, I was more worried about the gains that the right wing would make because of the false strategy of PPP. It was a cake in a plate offered to right wing politicians to taste it as they like.

I wrote,

“Why Pakistan Peoples Party leadership took a decision that they did not have the ability to implement it. Now PPP leadership is on retreat as usual. What a charlatan justification by the Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani when he says that they will respect the decisions of the higher courts.  Pakistan Peoples Party is creating a new record of retreats under mass pressure. They have done that in case of restoration of judges, NRO and now on elevating the judges. Who is derailing democracy? First and for most, the present ruling class under the direct leadership of Pakistan Peoples Party is derailing the frail and fragile democracy. They do not need enemies. They are in their own ranks. No one can shove democracy aside if Pakistan Peoples Party leadership would have done some positive for the masses. They have done all the harm to themselves. They have to help themselves in saving the democracy”.

However, I have felt that instead of arguing about the policies of PPP, our friends are making us guilty as the one who are derailing the process of democracy by our criticism of PPP. When ever, we criticize the policies of PPP government, some friends comes to rescue PPP by jacketing us with conservatives and religious fanatics.  They are not thinking of the negative effects of the policies of the PPP leadership on the ordinary lives of the working people,  instead, they have this sacred idea of democracy. On the name of saving the democracy, they want us to give up our criticism of PPP feudal, capitalist and pro imperialist leadership.

They also feel proud to point out that there is no Left in Pakistan. By saying this, they want us to believe that PPP is a Left force. PPP is no Left force anymore. At best, it is right wing capitalist feudal dominant political party who has established some progressive traditions in past. One can not live on past glorious struggle for ever.

There is no doubt that Left has no mass roots. Anyhow, it is trying to swim against the stream and is swimming not badly. We as Left forces have a proud record of building movements of the workers and peasants particularly in the heartland of Punjab. We are doing our best. We need your support.

On 29 January, we were able to mobilize over 10,000 workers and peasants at famous Dhobi Ghat ground of Faisalabad, a number that PPP and Muslim League Nawaz are unable to do in Faisalabad at present. Not a single word of praise by our friends on this historic gathering organized by the Left.

On 17 March 2009, we will again mobilize thousands of peasants at Okara Military Farms. Both PPP and PMLN had promised the tenants of Okara and other cities that land ownership will be granted whenever they come to power. I do not hear from many of our friends to remind the both parties to fulfill their promise. The famous Anjaman Mozareen Punjab was the first organization to challenge the brutal suppression of general Musharaf during his hay days. Lawyers came five years later on the screen.

The movement of workers in Faisalabad and peasants of Okara are not dominated by the religious fanatics but are working in coordination of the progressive forces and that is minus PPP.

Once again, the events of the last few days have shown the complete bankruptcy of the strategies of PPP leadership. Their strategies are paving the way for more right wing ideas that have resources and commercial media control. It is not us, but PPP leadership that is helping the right wing. We are the fierce fighters of our class who are opposing the growing ideas of religious fundamentalism and right with as a whole. We need your encouragement.
